Computing True Style PointsTM

To compute True Style Points we simply add the margin of victory (or defeat) to an opponent’s VSI and adjust for whether the game was played at home, away or on a neutral site.

The True Style Points accurately portrays big wins, “moral victories” and blowouts. For example:

  • Upset a powerhouse team with a VSI of 25 by 3 points and receive 28 True Style Points
  • Lose to the same powerhouse by a field goal and you still receive 22 True Style Points
  • Blow out a weak team with a VSI of -10 by 28 points and receive 18 True Style Points

Unlike the computer rankings making up the Bowl Championship Series, Fan Formula’s True Style Points™ ranking does not apply a principle of diminishing returns discounting large margins of victory. Therefore True Style Points is a far better match to many fans mental model of how good a team looked on the field.

True Style Points are assigned on a game by game basis and as an average for a team over the season. For example if South Carolina has True Style Points of 15, 20, and -5 in their first three games their current True Style Points ranking is equal to 10.
